2021 Design and Building Trends – Thrilled to Be Looking at The Year Ahead
It is here! A new year filled with a quiet expectation of 12 months packed with changes moving us to a new normal. It may be starting off looking like the year we had in 2020 but there is so much promise that things are turning the corner. Although 2020 was unsettling, it was not a complete train wreck. It had some redeeming qualities that I hold onto as I look to a new year and new ways to live in our world, homes, and communities. And on that note, there are some happy trends for 2021 that I am excited to incorporate in my upcoming projects and share with you as we build, design, remodel, and live in our own home.
Here are my top five!
Cozy and Comfortable: The major home trend that will not be leaving us in 2021 is creating a relaxed and casual home. From the color of your walls to the fabric on your sofas to the ambiance in your kitchen – a comforting environment is numero uno as we head into this new year. To find your favorite soft white for your walls, track down the most comfortable sectional, layer up your bed, update your kitchen for eating, baking, homework, or puzzling, follow us throughout 2021 for the latest trends. Anything goes if it makes your home feel like a big warm hug!
Making Every Room Matter: 2021 is a continuation of last year as we throw out our formal spaces (unless they are used for reading, relaxing, and reloading) and reinvent rooms. We are learning that unused spaces in homes are being traded for spaces that can serve our families. Maybe an office, study area for the kids, workout space, or craft room. We are reworking spaces to fit the needs that often got handled outside of our homes. So bring on reading nooks, kid's workspaces, and a meditation corner – it may be used long after 2021.
Connecting to the Outdoors: The trend of creating great outdoor spaces that are a continuation of our interiors is nothing new. In fact, this trend started years ago, but their footprint is getting bigger and bigger. And they are moving toward year-round usage. Covered porches, outdoor dining, fireplaces, TVs, bar areas, fire pits, kitchens – this trend is not going away any time soon. The outdoors helped us manage the pandemic and is still thought of as the healthiest gathering spot, so the need to extend living spaces to the outdoors is hotter than ever.
Natural Elements: Bring on nature, says this city girl! I have fallen in love with all of it! It will be trending whether it is wood, jute, sisal, linen, or faux fur. But maybe the most popular will be rattan as that seems to be the texture of the moment! Also included in our incorporation of natural elements will be the continuation of indoor plants. We saw this creeping in last year as we spent more time at home, but more plants and beautiful indoor planters will continue to be the rage. We will all need our green thumbs this year to keep up!
Trending Colors: I love that each year Pantone and many popular paint companies choose their "color of the year" to mirror what will be trending for the year ahead. And this year is no different. Drum roll, please…….
Pantone (chose two colors!) gray and lemon yellow. Maybe they are thinking goodbye gray skies and hello sunshine!
Benjamin Moore chose Aegean Teal 2136-40. It is a beautiful pop of color to be perfectly paired with gray, taupe, or white.
Sherwin Williams chose Urbane Bronze. They believe this is a color rooted in nature. Well, I am all in on it because it has been one of my favs for years!
My mind is already busy at work finding ways to incorporate each of these into my projects (maybe not so much of the yellow – ha!)
So cheers to the new year! (Thank goodness it's here.) I am excited to make the most of it, building, designing, and sharing my projects with you. As always, I am so appreciative of you checking in to see what we are up to in 2021 - celebrating possibilities!
Cheers to you all!
