Five Tips for Surviving a House Remodel

Remodeling a home while living in it can be a challenging experience. The dust, noise, and disruption can test your patience and, maybe, even your sanity. However, with careful planning from a few of my non-negotiable tips, I have learned to minimize the stress and successfully navigate the remodeling process.

Tip 1: Create Functional Spaces

One of the keys to living in a home undergoing a remodel is to assure functional spaces are intact. One project at a time!

Setting aside rooms that maintain all my needs is so important. Having a space where I can still be productive and keep on the grind is essential. Plus, escaping the chaos and maintaining a sense of normalcy in at least one room is a must for your mental health.

For example, if you're renovating two bathrooms, one of them should stay functional and equipped enough to meet your basic needs, while working on the other. Keeping yourself on track for creating your dream home is the goal!

Tip 2: Follow Through

Maintaining momentum is crucial to follow through on your projects. Set realistic goals, create a timeline, and focus on completing one project at a time. Crossing items off your list as the timeline goes on will give you a sense of progress and motivation to keep going!

Tip 3: Take Regular Breaks

Living through a remodel is exciting, but it can take a toll on you. I love to schedule regular breaks and plan mini getaways to recharge and rejuvenate. Proper rest can often be the key to creativity, success and can lead to some of your greatest design ideas.

Within your budget, plan for weekend trips or consider renting an Airbnb to escape the construction zone temporarily! This is also a fun way to set milestones for yourself- through getaways. Whether it be a city escape or a houseboat, changing your environment and enjoying a break from the chaos will help you maintain your sanity… trust me.

Tip 4: Hire a Cleaner

Dust and debris are inevitable, too. Clean up after each project when possible. To alleviate this burden, I recommend hiring some professional cleaners to regularly come in to stay on top of the dust and debris. They can perform light cleanings between projects and leave a tidy living environment for you.

Tip 5: Get Organized:

Living in a home under renovation requires flexibility and organization. Invest in hanging racks and storage tubs to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible. Create a system for storing and locating items, ensuring everything has a designated place.

I keep most of my decor close by, but carefully covered and prepared for me to put in place the moment the room screams: I’m ready! As a bonus, this saves me time with the clean up process.

Surviving a home remodel can be challenging – I get it. But being onsite and present is important to move the process along both economically and quickly. With careful planning and commitment, you can accomplish this process successfully. Create functional spaces, follow through on projects, take regular breaks, hire cleaning services, and stay organized. I believe in you!

Remember, its a temporary phase, and the end result will be a beautiful, renovated home that makes it all worthwhile.
